ETEN is a rather new brand to the South African market, and its latest GPS doesn't disappoint. The G500 sports a rather unique design that looks like something out of sci-fi movie. The buttons on the front of this device are flush with the body and are only separated by a blue line which lights up when the device is in use. Physically, it is also not overly bulky, and will fit in your pocket with ease. Its looks are also rather deceiving, because the ETEN G500 not only sports an integrated GPS receiver, but it's also a fully-fledged Pocket PC and cellphone. We appreciated the fact that the developers of this product also opted for a built-in GPS receiver, as a fold-out antenna can be cumbersome to use. Under the hood you will find a 400MHz Samsung processor with 12BMB of flash ROM and 64MB of RAM.

The operating system that ties this system together is Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5. The bundle that ships with the G500 is also rather impressive, and everything you need is available right out of the box. Not only does it feature an AC adapter and USB sync cable, but there is also a car charger and mount allowing you to view the GPS map while you are driving. Even though the G500 doesn't natively ship with any GPS software, the suppliers, Just Mobile, bundle HandyMap Al with each device. Even though this PDA/cellphone/GPS hybrid should eliminate the need to carry multiple devices, we were disappointed by the lack of Wi-Fi support, especially comparing it to some of the other devices in this roundup. Also, your cell phone bill is usually based on time used. Knowing that their customers don’t want to waste usage time, the cell phone companies refuse to publicly provide cell phone numbers.

So, you won’t get much useful information from these “FREE” services if you’re looking for unlisted or cell phone number information. You can get some very general information from some of them, but not the name and address of the owner of the number.

Recently I desperately needed to put an end to some obscene phone calls from a sicko unknown caller. For about a couple of weeks, I had been receiving calls from a no ID number. Some companies actually have tried to "skip" the process of building cell phone databases. These services just give you a list of services that sell these lookups and disappear when you ask for a refund. That money will just disappear, and you'll be back to your search... so why not go "straight to a proven source" from the beginning?

Location Sensitivity - Cell Phone GPS

When these services become available, they will only be location based. Another words, most GPS's these days will actually give you your current altitude and most have a pretty fast refresh rate. The refresh rate is the time between position updates. An example; If you have a GPS in your hand that refreshed three times per second, this would be a very acturate reading. Even if you are driving at 70 miles per hour, the moving map on the GPS will be able to keep up with your actual location. That's an issue the engineers are dealing with on the Location Sensitivity system. It wasn't designed to have any type of refresh rate at all. Once a position has been found, it never was designed to refresh that position. (I guess if you are hurt, and you called 911, you aren't supposed to be moving. Hmmm, So if you fell off a bridge, and landed in the back of a truck driving down the interestate, I'm not sure if they would be able to locate you. They would know where you were when you!

first dialed 911, but as your location changes, they might not be able to find you). Supposedly, the 911 operator can pull a refresh, this would at least tell them the direction the vehicle is moving. But to locate you while you're moving, might be more difficult than anyone had expected.

Another problem with many of the handheld units, the actual speed of the processors within them. Most cell phones operate on around 1 to 2 MHz processor speed. Most Smartphones operate anywhere between 30 to 500 MHz. (Most new home computers are operating between 2 to 4 GHz processor speed, just to give you an idea). This is where the engineers are running into the biggest problem with creating a GPS refresh rate. The processors in all handhelds will just have to be faster than they are today. And like all of our other technolgies, I'm sure this won't be a problem very much longer for the designers.

Hmmm, soon we'll have Pentium 9 cellular and Smartphones running at 8 GHz processor speed! You know it's going to come to this, and it's not that far away.

Alas, even cell phones had their drawbacks, in that their reception was often broken up, and calls could be dropped unceremoniously. When along came VOIP, a new choice in long distance phone calling was on the horizon. VOIP has many different options, and now it seems that we have the choice of combining VOIP technology with cell phones. The prospect of VOIP cell phone service brings with it the potential for even more freedom and convenience, along with lower prices. Or does it?

Normally, VOIP service is available in three modes: ATA, IP phone, and computer-to-computer. All of these services are common and available for use at your home computer. ATA, or analog telephone adapter, lets you connect your regular home telephone to your computer and use it for VOIP service by converting analog sound bits into digital data. IP, or Internet protocol, phones are telephones that are specially designed for use with VOPI service. These phones look just like a standard home phone, but are wired differently to be VOIP capable. You can have a cordless IP phone that allows you to move freely through your home or office as you talk. Computer-to-computer VOIP is achieved by installing software that you can get through a provider. You make long distance calls from your computer, and talk through a microphone that is hooked up to your machine. All of these services are convenient in their own ways, but do not have quite the portability that cell phones offer. That is why the idea of VOIP cell phones is so appealing. Potentially, it is the best of both worlds: portability and low cost phone service.

Cost savings is by far the most attractive aspect of VOIP.
